Canada’s Olivia Smith has just signed with Arsenal in what is being called the largest transfer deal in Canadian women’s soccer history. The 20-year-old forward joins the Gunners from Sporting CP in Portugal after a breakout year with the senior national team and an electric showing at the 2025 SheBelieves Cup.
Smith, who hails from Whitby, Ontario, has long been seen as a top prospect in the Canadian pipeline. After turning heads at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, her trajectory has only accelerated. With 17 goals in her last two seasons abroad, Arsenal wasted no time locking her in.
Manager Jonas Eidevall described Smith as “an attacking player with elite pace and confidence in the final third.” Arsenal plans to integrate her quickly into their Women’s Super League squad, particularly with key players recovering from injury.
Back home, Canada Soccer officials celebrated the move as a landmark for player development. “This isn’t just a transfer—it’s a signal to young Canadian players that global clubs are watching,” said national coach Bev Priestman.
Smith’s move follows recent investments in Canadian youth academies and expanded domestic scouting efforts. With more girls’ programs launching across Ontario, Alberta, and B.C., the ripple effect of her Arsenal signing could be massive.
She’s expected to make her debut later this month in a preseason clash with Bayern Munich. If the momentum continues, Smith may soon become the face of Canadian women’s soccer.
